Each player gets five cards. These are dealt face down. Then each player places an ante in the pot before betting. Once the betting is complete a fourth card is placed on the table that everyone can use. This is called the flop. After the flop there is another round of betting. When the betting is over the cards are exposed and the highest ranked hand wins the pot.
A pair of kings or better is considered a strong poker hand. There are other poker hands, however, including four of a kind and straights. Straights are 5 consecutive cards of the same suit, such as J-8-5-3-Spades. When hands tie on the rank, they break according to the high card rule.
If you have a strong poker hand, you should try to force weaker hands out of the game. You can do this by raising your bets. This will make it more expensive for the other players in the hand to call your raises, and they may fold or bluff. It is important to note, though, that if you are raising your bets often your opponents will know what you have and be less likely to call you with weak hands.
As you become more comfortable with poker, you will learn how to read other players. A large amount of reading comes from watching the way a player bets and not so much from subtle physical poker tells. For example, if you notice that a player always calls after the flop then you can assume they are playing fairly strong cards and probably have good bluffing skills.
It is also important to understand poker math. This includes knowing how to count cards and understand basic probability. In addition, you should know the different types of poker bets and how to calculate EV (expected value). The more you play and observe other players, the more these concepts will come naturally to you. Then you will be able to make smart decisions quickly.
